Chokers have been popular since 1990’s, and have been back in fashion since 2016, at least. They are made of many different types of materials such as plastic, leather, metal, and velvet. Chokers have been a part of women’s fashion for thousands of years. They originated from Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt. In the article “The History Behind…The Choker” from Nationaljeweler.com, author Michelle Graff explains that the reason why women wore chokers in ancient times, was, “To protect them and and give them power.” Women wore chokers to protect parts of their body they felt needed protection, which gave them power over others.
Anna Zigmond-Ramm, a freshmen at d.tech, expressed her favorite type of choker: “I like plain chokers that just add something small to what you’re wearing. I think the simple ones are more wearable. They go with everything and make any outfit look better.” Ashley Fong, the self-proclaimed “Choker Expert” at d.tech and a close friend of mine, said, “My three favorite chokers are made out of plastic, beads, and chains. They’re really comfortable and go with a lot of my outfits. They’re also very easy to add to make a outfit look more dressed up or down.” Both Zigmond-Ramm and Fong feel that chokers go well with a majority of their outfits.
There is no specific designer who is influencing the trend of chokers, but there are many celebrities who are wearing them and making them come back in style. Emily Kirkpatrick from People.com wrote, “This retro look, the revival is being spearheaded by a surprisingly diverse group of celebrities, ranging from the perennially trendy Victoria Justice to the more goth-chic Rooney Mara.” Some celebrities embracing the choker trends are, Vanessa Hudgens, Keke Palmer, Cara Delevingne, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. Today you can find most chokers available at Urban Outfitters, Brandy Melville, Nordstroms, Forever 21, Pacsun, Hot Topic, Francesca’s, and Amazon. Whether you wear chokers, see chokers, or buy chokers, they are here to stay, at least for now!
